By Car: The park can be reached in three ways:
- 1. Leave Tirana on the SH1 road, then turn into SH39/E762, until reaching E851 (Rruga e Kombit, The National Road) heading to Kosovo at the Milot crossroads. When at the Morina border with Kosovo, take the road that goes from Prizren to Gjakova and then Tropoja. The trip usually takes about 4 hours. Don’t forget to bring your passport or other form of valid ID, for you will be crossing the Albania-Kosovo border twice.
- 2. The second option also leaves from Tirana on the aforementioned route, where just before entering Kosovo you will need to turn on E581 and stay on this road until you reach Nikaj-Mertur. Even though this route is also paved, the windy nature of the road can make the journey last up to 6 hours.
- 3. From Shkoder, take road SH5 and then turn into SH22, passing Qafa e Malit, Dushaj, and Fierza to reach the Nikaj-Mertur Regional Nature Park. This route provides visitors with the opportunity to enjoy some very scenic views, but the road is not well maintained, and the journey can take up to 6 hours.
By Bus From Tirana, buses and coaches leave every 1-2 hours for the town of Bajram Curri, with service ending at 2pm. The bus terminal is located in front of the Asllan Rusi Sports Building in the Zogu i Zi neighborhood. From Bajram Curri, you can take a local van to Nikaj-Mërtur from the same spot where the Tirana bus drops you off. Vans to Nikaj-Mertur depart every hour. The whole trip from Tirana lasts 6-7 hours.
By Ferry: The most scenic way to reach Nikaj-Mertur is via Lake Koman. Travelers can catch a ferry from the tiny village of Koman, where there are several licensed companies offering transportation services from May to September. A car ferry is also added during the summer months. Once the ferry drops you off at Fierza, you can look for the furgons (local vans) headed to the different villages in the area.
The company guides usually speak English, Italian and/or German.
